Why We Don’t Make Browser-Based Apps for Tradeshows

As a conference manager, you may have found yourself asking this question: Why bother with a mobile app when you can use a browser-based app?

That is a question that comes up frequently. Like Evernote and many other app developers, we have chosen to develop what are known as “native apps”, rather than offering browser-based HTML “apps” for mobile lead retrieval.

HTML apps can be developed more quickly and easily. One version can be used on all mobile devices that can access the Internet. A significant amount of time is saved by developing a single app that can be used universally. So what’s the downside?

A native app must be developed specifically for each mobile operating system. One size does not fit all. There must be individual native apps: One for Apple, another for Android, for Blackberry, for Kindle, etc. Costly? Yes. Time Consuming? Yes. Worth it? Yes!!

As Phil Libin, Evernote’s CEO,  says, “…people gravitate towards the products with the best overall user experience. It’s very hard for something developed in a cross-platform, lowest-common-denominator technology to provide as nice an experience as a similar native app.”

Browser (HTML) apps make things easy for developers. Native apps make things easy for users. With a native app, for example, an on-line connection is not necessary. For a browser-based app, it is essential. Now, whose life do you want to make easy…your vendor’s or your attendees’ and exhibitors’?

If you are an event organizer, this is a critical distinction. Many, probably most, venues lack reliable Wi-Fi. Even when Wi-Fi is available on a trade show floor, when thousands of attendees and hundreds of exhibitors are vying simultaneously to access it, quality is inevitably going to be degraded. Don’t risk frustrating you attendees and exhibitors by offering browser-based apps.

The iPad2: What it Can Mean for Trade Show Exhibitors

Lots of companies have found just how useful the original iPad can be at a trade show. Now comes the iPad2. Is it any better than the original?  Darn tootin’, in my opinion.  It can be used to show videos better than ever. You want musical accompaniment? No problem. Maybe you want to call the home office and give the folks back there a look at the show. If they have an iPad2, you can do it. As for lead capture, currently there is no better way in my opinion. So, install your video, download iLeads and you are set to go.

Bartizan Presents a Free Webinar: Secrets to Help Attendees and Exhibitors Stay Connected after the Show

Bartizan Connects today announced details of an upcoming webinar, “Secrets to Help Attendees and Exhibitors Stay Connected after the Show,” a 10 minute lunchtime session. This webinar is part of Bartizan’s Monthly Free Webinar Thought Leadership Series for members of the trade show industry.

The live webinar is hosted by Bartizan’s president, Lew Hoff.  Post webinar, attendees will also receive the informative slides from the day’s educational session. For more information about this webinar or to register, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/TradeshowWebinar

Bartizan recently surveyed trade show attendees across a range of industries and show profiles. The focus of the survey was to determine how they view the show experience and how they deal with what they’ve learned from the show when they return home. The methodology used for gathering this research was a series of online focus groups used to solicit attitudes and opinions regarding trade show industry experiences from the unique perspectives of trade show attendees.

Bartizan thought the data was worth sharing with customers. It is expected that it will not apply to everyone. But its expected that it will apply to many tradeshow participants. In a landscape where show attendance is at risk, delivering this kind of added value for everyone may be good territory to explore.

When Bartizan analyzed what was learned from the interactions with attendees in the context of similar interactions with exhibitors and organizers, it was noted how ineffective post-show interaction was between attendees and exhibitors.

If broader marketplace visibility plays a role in show strategy, then how visitors are handles who aren’t active sales opportunities becomes important. During this webinar we pinpoint where we see exhibitors lose that visibility with the broader marketplace. And we suggest a general approach to solving it that some might find worth pursuing.

The 10-minute session is jam-packed with takeaways. Specifically we focus on:

1. A profile of the “curious” Attendee.

2. The breakdown of the connection between Exhibitors and those Attendees.

3. The problem that breakdown causes.

4. The collaboration between Exhibitors and Organizers that can repair that connection.

It’s All the Rage: Mobile Apps for Meetings

This month in Meetings & Conventions Magazine the cover story is on Mobile Apps for Meetings: What Smartphone Technology Can do for your Attendees.

At Bartizan, we saw this trend coming. This is why we developed the first lead retrieval app for the iPhone, iLeads

After conducting extensive focus groups and surveying show managers, exhibitors and attendees, we took a good, hard look at what the iPhone could mean to our business and we set out to offer the next generation of lead retrieval. The result was the development of a first-of-its-kind iPhone, iPad and iPod touch App for trade show lead retrieval.

As an app, iLeads allows businesses to confront a huge problem they face each time they exhibit: lead follow up. iLeads lets you do it instantly.

Also by using the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch in conjunction with cloud computing, iLeads also eliminates the friction (shipping costs, staffing, capital investment, maintenance and availability) generated by dedicated lead retrieval terminals – the core of our business for nearly two decades.

Interesting New Research on Trade Show Lead Retrieval and Management – Debunks the 80% No Follow up Myth!

EXHIBITOR magazine conducted its 2010 Sales Lead Survey and discovered some interesting trends. They found that despite the oft quoted industry myth that 80 percent of leads never receive post-show follow-up, four out of 10 respondents report that upwards of 80 percent of the leads they collect at trade shows and events do receive follow-up communication.

In terms of lead qualification, only 34 percent of respondents have a formal lead-scoring or lead-ranking process designed to prioritize follow-up or gauge the potential value of each lead (the majority of those scoring/ranking procedures were developed jointly by the sales and marketing departments). And those leads are typically qualified during formal or informal conversations between staffers and attendees (only 18 percent use surveys to qualify leads). But despite the importance placed on those staffer/attendee conversations, nearly 20 percent of survey respondents fail to train their booth staffers on lead-qualification tactics.

Today’s lead retrieval systems make it easier to qualify leads. The iPhone’s easy interface is a natural fit for lead retrieval – check out the world’s first app for lead retrieval here.
